A patient is currently being treated by physical therapy for a variety of issues including weakness and chronic pain, but the doctor listed lumbar compression fracture as the primary diagnosis. The fracture occurred approximately three months prior, however, it is the primary reason for the patient's pain and weakness. My question is do I still code the fracture aftercare code of V5489? I've tried looking at various books and other resources and cannot find a specific timeline regarding fractures. Maybe I should just code history of injury. I will appreciate any recommendations!:)

My advice is to code only the pain and weakness. My reasoning: in PT you are not treating the fracture, you are treating the pain and weakness.
