I passed my CPC-A exam on 9/9/2025, but I have yet to find a job posting willing to consider applicants with no experience. How have others found positions without the requisite experience?

As a bit of background, I took a long hiatus to home educate my children and have worked various part-time positions since they entered high school (two are now college grads - one engineer and one pre-med - and the "baby" gets her undergrad in December and begins her graduate degree in January). None of my part-time gigs grew into anything more than temporary or part-time, and I am ready for a new chapter in life and work; hence training for the CPC.

You may not be able to find a coding job (per se) without experience, but there are other revenue cycle positions that are entry level. Patient access, scheduling, medical records, payment posting, etc., all are part of healthcare revenue and once you have your foot in the door, you're more likely to be acknowledged for a coding position if you already work there. Good luck.

I passed by CPC in May 2025 and have not been able to obtain a "coding" position. I have taken a "internal referral" position, at a much less than desired pay rate, just to get my foot in the door. I was very disappointed after passing my exam to find out that there are no actual coding jobs available at an entry level. I might have chosen another area of certification or just tried to get the highest paying job in the medical field that I could and then perused the coding certification. It has been a lot of work just to get certified. I am working on completing Practicode but now I am reading that most employers to do not accept Practicode as actual experience, so I am questioning whether to complete that or not. It would have been great to have been given honest information about entry level coding positions before I paid for the course. I was told that after completing the course through AAPC that obtaining employment would be possible and was given information about what the salary for a coder could be. When signing up for the course, I was never told that the certificate would be an apprentice certificate. I found that information out by reading other comments from AAPC students. Taking the course is a personal achievement for me at my age. However, the sole purpose of taking the course was to obtain employment at a higher salary. I would not personally recommend this course to anyone that is looking for immediate hiring into a coding position. This was to be a second income for my family. A year and a half later, I am taking a referral position at half the salary that I was expecting being CPC certified.

Currently I am working as a Medical Biller and looking to grow as a Medical Coder. I graduated and am now a CPC-A. I am also working on Practicode and would like to complete to get my A removed but am struggling to find a "coding" job. I work in person now and would like to work remotely but I know we all have to start somewhere. I have previous experience working in the hospital and as a temp as a PSR. Looking for more opportunity.

I feel the same way you could not have said it any better I was not aware of this myself and you have an option for practicode which is another time consuming you may as well say it's another course at $300 I am so discouraged right now

I am also incredibly discouraged. Wish I'd just saved the time and money and taken one of the jobs I'm going to have to settle for. TBH, the training isn't getting me through any HR filters even for "related" positions. The only jobs I can get callbacks for are jobs that are entirely irrelevant to the training. I am so bummed; I could have used that money for home repairs... now I've got a deficit to make up and the training has just delayed that. :(

Unfortunately, there seem to be no entry level positions in any of those fields, either. I've tried. No one wants less than 1-2 years of experience, and so I am literally where I started except with less money in the bank. It is super discouraging.

Look at hospitals, private practices, rehab facilities, nursing homes, veterans/military facilities, community mental health centers, rural health centers, federally qualified health centers, critical access hospitals, urgent care centers, Indian healthcare facilities and insurance companies.

I totally hear you—and you're definitely not alone. So many new coders with CPC-A are in the same boat: trained, certified, and eager to work, but stuck in that frustrating loop where every job seems to require “experience.” I have been working with a community college in the area for internship opportunities for Medical Biller/Coder programs, when one of the ladies I know personally reached out to me with the same challenge like you are having. I hired her, trained her and mentored her all the way. The struggle is real.

👋 I wanted to share an opportunity that might help bridge that exact gap, thanks to that coder who's still with me. I am looking to gather a small group, train and hopefully keep!

I posted details here: https://www.aapc.com/discuss/thread...-to-cpc-a-removal-and-career-growth-🌟.205055/

Wishing you success on your coding journey! There are people looking to invest in motivated new coders. You've just found one. 👊

Warm regards,
Julia

I feel this way as well. I've been a stay at home mom for 4 years and knew it would be hard to get a job so taking this medical coding and billing course for a year and then getting my CPCA I thought would help me and now I'm struggling still to get a job.
