Patient is in treatment for Breast Cancer and is receiving Radiation. How can we bill for genetic counsling the doctor is also providing. would we use 96040 Medical Genetics and Genetic counseling services each 30 min.(or is this code not billable by the doctor), or 99401-99412 or an E & M office visit code (99201-99215) with dx of v84.02 genetic susceptibility to malignant neoplasm of ovary.
1. One patient has begun her external beam treatments and Dr did a genetic consult in the middle of treatment. How do you bill this?
2. How do you bill a genetic consult post external beam treatment, but within the 90 day rule?
These patients are breast cancer patients the he counsels due to risk of ovarian cancer. He will order the lab work that determines their risk, I believe it is the BRCA testing. If this lab work is positive, he counsel again to determine and provide their options/course of action. Not sure if these can be billed as a time based E&M code. Your help in researching would be greatly appreciated.
