I have a genetics lab billing using ICD 655.13 to perform genetic screening for the only indication of advanced maternal age. The 655 category title is Known or Suspected fetal abnormality affecting management of mother and the 655.1x is Chromosomal abnormality in Fetus.
While advanced maternal age may be a reason to 'suspect' a fetal abnormality, the subcode does not include the term 'suspected'. Interestingly 655.0 does not use suspected in the title but does include it in the sublistings. 655.3, 655.4, 655.5, 655.6 and 655.8 all include the word 'suspected'.
The results showed no abnormality.
Is this a correct code for genetic testing for advanced maternal age?
I would have thought the correct coding would be 659.5 or 659.6 Elderly primigravida or Elderly multigravida.
