Hello,

If a patient is coming to a gastroenterologist for the first time to have a workup before their screening colonoscopy (not on the same day), what ICD-9 code would I use?

You can use the screening dx code only when the screening procedure is being performed. You must be careful about this as many payers will use the patients benefit for the visit when you use the that code. There really is no code that can be used when they payient has been scheduled for a screening test. They have already been evaluated by the PCP s having met the screening criteria. Thus is why Medicare does not allow a chargeable visit prior to the scheduled screening
