Hello, I am an outpatient surgery coder at a hospital, I have a question about a Global surgery package.
a patient had a major procedure on 05-01 and received pain meds administered on 05/02 related to surgery
are these chargeable ?
Thanks,
Carol

The facilities where I've worked would charge for the drugs themselves but not for the administration in this situation. Even though it was performed on the subsequent day and would not bundle under the NCCI rules, it is still considered a 'packaged' item that is part of that surgical procedure and the outpatient encounter is going to be priced at the APC rate based on the surgery and there won't be additional reimbursement for the administration fee in either case. So for reporting consistency, I think it makes sense not to charge extra for it on an outpatient encounter simply based on the fact that it occurred on a separate calendar date. But your facility should be the one to make this determination and should give you their internal guidance on this.
