What exactly is HEDIS, and how is it used? Thank you!

HEDIS is a quality of care measurment. I complete forms for my employer for a Medicare Advantage plan based on HEDIS core measures. I.e. did the patient have a mammo within the past two years or did the patient have a glaucoma screening in the past year etc. these are quick ones but there are sometimes 15 questions on the form relating to past and at risk diagnosis.
