In the scenario of the doctor first attempting the Pt's cholecystectomy laproscopically, only to find he needs to convert to an open chole, am I able to bill the open chole 47600 plus the 49320 for lap with a -59 modifier ?

I was taught that if a procedure is converted from lap to open, you only code for the open procedure - so, the 47600-47620 series. Hope it helps!

lap vs open

If it is converted you are suppose to be the completed procedure which would be the open on. there is a ICD-9 code for converted procedure it is V64.41.

I hope this helps
