My company is looking into hiring Perinatologists. I have questioned the types of procedures they would do both in office and in the hospital inpatient outpatient setting. My Director of Revenue was unable to give me with any information. As an coder I would like to be prepared prior to provider starting. If any one can share any these procedures codes I would be very grateful.

Well first, we need to understand that a perinatologist, sometimes also referred to as a maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) specialist, is an obstetrician-gynecologist who specializes in high-risk pregnancy. In addition to their OB/GYN residency, a perinatologist also completes a three-year fellowship that focuses on complications of pregnancy (medical, fetal, genetic, and more) and their effects on the mother as well as the fetus. Given this you would expect him/her to provide care to the pregnant patient who is having complications. So you might see them performing more detailed ultrasounds and fetal testing, or fetal echos, but basic care would still be the same as for any ob/gyn. They probably would not be monitoring the entire pregnancy unless the patient presented at the outset with a complicated pregnancy so you might be able to bill individual visits for treatment of the complications on the date they occurred. If denied because the provider is part of the practice, request a review after delivery for additional payment.
