I have a physician who's op reports says "closed reduction was performed while applying a sugar tong splint" he then coded for closed reduction with manipulation. He doesn't state the word manipulation in the report and says he doesn't have to. He needs to say manipulation to charge for it correct?

He is also saying " Believe me that synonyms are allowed in dications (fracture reduction = fracture manipulation = fracture realignment.) All are OK."

Is he correct? If not does anyone know were there is written documentation I can show him? Thanks for your help
 
It is written in the CPT book. Many of the ortho surg codes are "with manipulation" or "without manipulation." Therefore in order for it to be coded properly, he would need to state what he did. With manipulation probulary has more RVU's.
