I hope someone can help me, either to confirm my thoughts or to guide me towards something I am missing. I code/bill for a hospitalist group who recently utilized some doctors in a locums capacity, since one of our doctors left the group. This locums period ended on 4/26/11. My understanding of the guidelines for billing for doctors after the locums period has expired is that they can no longer be billed under the doctor they are substituting for and then must be billed under there own name/numbers.

The lead physician feels he can have one of the "locums" doctors admit the patient and then bill it the following day or 2 days later under one of the members of the group. He feels he can substantiate this by having the doctor reexamine the patient and enter his own note. I say this is inappropriate.

Please, please, help!!!!
