Help, I'm having trouble deciding the appropriate codes for the following:
A surgeon performing a kidney transplant ask for a nephrologist to see the patient to "evaluate the need for hemodialysis prior to transplantation" during the hospital stay. This type of request is performed on every kidney transplant patient. Would this visit be considered an inpatient consultation or a subsequent hospital visit? In the example above the nephrologist has not seen the patient and is only discussing the dialysis management, if it is decided that the dialysis is needed the nephrologist would initiate this on the same day. Anyone have any advice or useful links, any help is much appreciated.
