Good Afternoon,

I have a couple of questions about hernia repairs. I want to make sure that we are billing according to CCI edits.

My doctor did two hernia repairs (49653 and 49561) that we can't bill together due to CCI edits. The op note reads like they are standard hernia repairs (no added work). Would it be appropriate to add a 22 modifier since both are incarcerated?

Also, when the doctor is doing another abdominal procedure and they have to fix an incarcerated is it appropriate to bill that hernia repair?

Thanks in advance!

if there is a seperate incision you can certainly bill with the new mod to replace 59.......repair of a hernia to get to another body part is not billable. If extensive work is done, I would def try mod 22
