I know that the guidelines give more information about the HIV vs. AIDS, but I am getting conflicting information from other coders.

When is the best time to use V08? I thought it was when the patient had no symptoms. Would this be if they are on drug regiment for the HIV?

When is the best time to use 042? I thought if they had some symptom or hosptialization?

Please advise.

Thanks!
Ramona

V08 is for use when a patient is diagnosed as HIV+ with no HIV related illness now or in the past. Once a patient is symptomatic (has an HIV related illness such as pneumocystic pnemonia, or AIDS), then you code 042, once the patient progresses to 042 status then you will always code them as 042 regardless of current symptomatic status.
