I have a scenario where a patient was seen in the ED then sent to the PICU where they were under the intensivist's care and days later transferred to the inpatient hospital floor where they were admitted for care for by the hospitalist providers. On the date of transfer the intensivist billed 99291 and when later seen by the hospitalist upon transfer the hospitalist provider billed a subsequent inpatient visit--is this correct? Since the hospitalist group has not seen the patient until this date of transfer, should it be billed as an initial inpatient visit instead?
