How would you code this? Patient was scheduled for a lumbar PRP injection in our office fluoroscopy suite. The patients blood was harvested and centrifuged, when it came time to inject the PRP the patient became nervous and decided to cancel the injection. Everything else leading up to the injection was performed. This is a self pay service, patient signs a contract accepting responsibility prior to the procedure. Thoughts?

Since the PRP was harvested already, the procedure has clearly been initiated, even if there's no anaesthesia involved.
I believe this would qualify for a -53 modifier on the 0232T code.

Thank you for your reply. I advised similar and my provider agreed. 0232T with 52 modifier because the procedure wasn't aborted due to extenuating circumstances and I figured since a portion of the procedure was performed and a portion was not, reduced services would suffice. But someone else suggested we itemize the procedure (blood draw, PRP kit & possibly an E/M code...) however I didn't feel like doing that would accurately reflect the extent the procedure went to before the patient ended it. Thanks again!
