We are looking for some solid guidance from CMS or a MAC regarding billing for IVPushes and hydration. CPT book states hydration should not be billed concurrently with drug administration. IVPush is billed for anything up to 15 minutes duration, which is easy with a start and stop time. However, we bill for IVP if all you have is a start time and no stop time because you can defend the med was administered, you can't defend a duration. If all we have is a start time, how much time should be subtracted from the hydration, 1 minutes or the maximum of 15 minutes? If you have three or more pushes you would then subtract 1 hour of hydration because you have more than 31 minutes you are taking out of the hydration time. A vendor for billing software is claiming you don't have to subtract for pushes. I've put the question out to both MAC and CMS and to date no response so thought I would share the question with the group. Thanks for the help!
