What is accurate code for Hypertension associated with DM ?

E11.59, I10
E11.59 is a circulatory complication and then the I10 shows the insurance company that the Hypertension is the circulatory issue.

or E11.69- diabetes with other complications, with I10 on claim as well.

I would suggest coding them individually as ICD-10 coding convention doesn't assume a causal relationship b/w DM and HTN..
Ajeet, can you further explain on this? I am also struggling with coding DM with HTN. The provider documents DM with HTN or HTN associated to/related to DM... because of those linking terms are we able to assign E11.59 or E11.69? Or are you stating that those two conditions clinically do not have a causal relationship and therefore should be coded as seperate?
