Can anyone clarify why I13.11, Hypertensive heart and chronic kidney disease without heart failure, with Stage V chronic kidney disease, also requires an additional code to specify the stage of CKD?
 
The code description is I13.11 Hypertensive heart and chronic kidney disease without heart failure, with stage 5 chronic kidney disease, or end stage renal disease
Use additional code to identify the stage of chronic kidney disease (N18.5, N18.6) N18.6 is CKD V Requiring dialysis.

The additional code identifies stage V N18.5 or ESRD requiring dialysis N18.6. It gives more specific information than I13.11.

With N18.6 you must also Use Additional code to identify dialysis status (Z99.2)
