can I use code 10061 I&D of an abscess 5x7cm if it is packed with 1/2 inch packing and dressed? if not when is it appropriate to use the 10061 and is there anything in writing? i looked in the cdr and it doesn't really say. thank you, alice

Hi Alice,

The general view is that the packing will get you to 10061. There is a citation in the Ingenix Book I mentioned in another E. But that is a secondary source. Some might argue that more work needs to be done like drain placement to get there. But the general convention these days is the packing or multiple I&Ds gets you there.
