I have a patient who came to the ER for a cat bite on the right forearm. They performed an I&D on the wound and drained serosanguinous fluid on EACH of the four tooth puncture sites to open the wound for better drainage. There was NO abscess at any of the sites. My coworker coded this with CPT 10140 X 4 and my question is, is this appropriate? It was one wound that was I&D'ed, would others code it out as x 4 for each tooth mark? We're talking the difference between $279.00 and $1116.00 and that is only the professional charges. Please, help! Thank you!
