We are contracted by 2 large hospitals in our area to do the inpatient pain management. We are consulted to see patients who have uncontrolled pain after surgery, trauma, acute health issues, etc. We do the initial consult and make adjustment to pain medication regimen, add adjunctive medications, recommend injections, etc. Then we follow them usually daily until discharge or when pain is well controlled and make recommendations for discharge medications for pain control. Often times when we go to add the diagnosis for the pain we are treating, such as acute back pain, or Acute abdominal pain, etc, that diagnosis has already been used by the hospitalist, surgeon, etc. and we do not know what diagnosis to use, so we can get these claims paid. I also am having trouble with what Z codes are appropriate to add for supporting codes. Does anyone have any suggestions?
