I bill for a pain clinic that sees patients monthly in order to refill their pain meds, we do not bill with any maintenance diagnoses. We use the diagnosis for the condition or issue that is causing their pain.

The codes in category 338 are to be used when the reason for the visit is pain management. Follow the instructions from the coding guideliens on how to apply these codes given the documentation.
