Hi there :-)

Was wondering if anyone could explain how ICD-10 code T40.2X3A- Poisoning by other opioids, assault, initial encounter- should be interpreted as far as the mention of assault within the description.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ellie

Assault by a drug is when a person is given the drug against their will or knowledge

Nov 2018 Healthcare Business Monthly article on Poisoning

I am confused by the third poisoning example in the article on Poisoning in the Nov 2018 issue of Healthcare Business Monthly (page 47). It states "Nonprescription drug or medicinal agent taken with a prescription drug (properly taken) with resulting reaction" and the code selected is T47.0X3A instead of T47.0X1A.

Any help on understanding why the Assault code was used would be appreciated. (Or if there is a forum specifically for the HBM, please point me to it.)

Thanks so much,
