I am uncertain as to which code to use when coding for a patella fracture due to a fall in a patient who has a previous total knee replacement. I see that the S82__ is for the traumatic fracture, however since the patient's joint is a prosthetic implant, I was leaning towards the T84_ series of codes for complications of internal orthopedic prosthetic device. However, I see conflicting information. Would someone please give me clarification and the documentation to support the recommended code choice?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I just looked for this about a month ago and found the answer in the Coding Clinic publication listed below. I wasn't sure if we are allowed to copy the text here, it says code the traumatic fracture first and the M97-periprosthetic code second.
