I own a medical billing company. I have a new client who is an ID(infectious disease) consult in a hospital. I credentialed her with most insurance companies. She does strictly consultations. She does critical care in hospitals, inpatient in hospitals, and outpatient in a private office.
I was going to code them with codes 99241-45 for outpatient. 99251-55 for inpatient. 99291, 99292 for critical care services.
I have read that some payors don't recognize consult codes anymore. Do you guys have any suggestions as to another way I can bill payors for these consultations?

For Inpatient consult you use the initial inpatient levels. For outpatient you use office levels new or established. I have never heard of a ID provider using critical care codes. Look closely at the criteria for critical care to be certain your provider is performing all the required elements. Just because the patient is in ICU is not a reason to use critical care codes.
