I am new with inpatient coding. I know the new ICD-9 codes take effect 10/01/08, but if the inpatient stay begins 9/27/08 and ends 10/05/08, do you use the 2008 codes or the 2009? Does present on admission mean that one would use the codes effective on the date of admission?

That sounds right to me as well since typically that is when you know the discharge diagnosis, procedures, etc.

I don't have any documentation to back this up, but that would be my best guess.

Diagnostic codes are used based on the date of discharge.

If you have a good ICD-9, it should be stated in the guidelines.

Good luck & hope this helps.
