What would be the correct code if two incision and drainage were performed on same date of service in physician's office?

If multiple incisions were made than the appropriate code would be 10061 for I&D of abscess (complicated or multiple).

  • This code is reserved for I&D of more than one infection site, or for I&D of one infection site that is clinically complex.
  • I&D requires a small incision by scalpel or other sharp instrument. It also requires active wound drainage by the physician.
  • A drain may be placed. Staged closure may be required.
  • The documentation should show that both incision and drainage of an abscess were performed and that multiple incisions were made. Medicare considers the abscess "complicated" if multiple incisions were made.
