Wiki Incomplete Dx (missing final digit)

Would it be appropriate if a dx is missing its final digit to code it with the unspecified code?

For example if the provider includes N18 on the order, would it be ok to code N18.9 (unspecified CKD)?
 
you need to check the documentation to see what diagnosis was rendered to know which additional digit is correct. It is never correct to use a code and apply a random additional number without checking the documentation.
