Hello,

We are an independepent laboratory. We have a long term acute care hospital that bills under DRGs that would like to be able to send us specimens for one of our tests that their lab does not offer. Are we able to bill for that test even though the patient is an inpatient?

Thank you!

You will need to bill the hospital for the test. Most payers will consider the test a component of a DRG payment and will not reimburse it if you bill the payer directly. The hospital can reimburse your laboratory and then they can include the charge on their facility claim.
