If an inpatient has Medicare and the hospitalist saw the patient and will be using the AI modifier, what should you code if the physician documentation does not support an initial visit since one of the components is not met? Should you just go ahead and bill a subsequent visit or do you have to bill an initial for the first time the hospitalist saw the patient?
