I am new to Ophthalmology coding and I am trying to explain to providers the requirements of 92002-92014. For the 'initiation of diagnostic and treatment program' requirement, are there any resources out there that go into this in more detail than the CPT book?

Specifically, if a provider is doing a diabetic retinal exam and the patient does not have retinopathy. Would it be ok if the provider documents that they emphasized the importance of blood sugar control and following with their PCP on their DM? Or if the patient has cataracts, the provider recommends surgery, but the patient says 'not yet'.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We are in the same boat - the provider bills a comprehensive code, but the diagnostic/treatment plan, to us, doesn't seem to fit. Posted in another string as well the same question.

AAPC's HBM magazine had a great article about this recently. I honestly am not sure which month it was, but I know it was within the last six months. See if you can find that!
