Hi Listserve,
This is a question that I already know the answer for, but I want to make sure I am in agreement.

A request is made for an opinion or advice in the inpatient setting for a problem that the consulting physician already gave 3 months previously & already billed an inpatient consult for 3 months ago.

The consulting physician wants to report a subsequent visit due to the same problem he already gave an opinion to previously.

May he/she report an inpatient visit for the same problem? Or, should he/she report a subsequent visit? Just a note, that yes - all the requirements were met for the consult.

Continuosly seeing patient for problem?

If the consulting physician has continued to treat the patient for the problem, I would think that a subsequent hospital visit would be more appropriate.

If the consulting physician has not seen the patient for the problem in the intervening 3 months, I'd say he has an inpatient consultation. (Assuming all benchmarks are met and documentation supports.)
