We have an inpatient detox facility with private and semi-private rooms. When we bill for a private our claims are denied. Does anyone have any idea what we may be doing wrong? Thanks so much!

When I was working inpatient the only time a payer would pay the private room charge was if there was clear medical necessity for the need for the private room. Otherwise if the patient or family requested it, they had to pay the difference. If the only room available was a private room the you charge the semi room rate. If you have to move a patient to the private room due to a disruptive room mate then again you chatge as a semi private.
