Inpatient Initial Visits

I work at a GI group where our physicians conduct consultations on the inpatient floors of the local hospital.

I know the admitting physician (usually a hospitalist) needs to add the modifier AI to the initial inpatient visit. (the hospital billing does not always code this correctly)

Sometimes our physicians see the patient on the same day for consultation as referred by the hospitalist.

If the insurance does not permit consultation codes, these are crosswalked to the appropriate initial inpatient visit code.

Is there a modifier we can use the show that our physicians are not the admitting MD but consulting MD?

We are seeing denials with these situations.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
