This question is for coding pro fee.

If a patient was admitted for suicidal ideations and depression, provider's progress notes denote intermittent suicidal ideations throughout stay and on discharge summary list the d/c diagnosis of depression and suicidal ideations(resolved), would you code SI since the patient was treated for SI and depression?

I know SI is a symptom of depression but coding guidelines state that you shouldn't code symptoms routinely associated with a disease. Therefore, is SI a common symptom of depression? Many people have depression but do not have symptoms of SI.

I would love to hear feedback about this topic.
