We have seen a lot of situations lately where a patient will be in our behavioral health ED for several days, and they're admitted to a "virtual" inpatient bed while waiting for a bed to open up on our mental health unit. While they are in the bhed, they are evaluated as an inpatient. My question is how do we code these initial inpatient evaluations while they're in bhed? I code the initial bhed visit as normal, but can I code the initial eval as a 90801 even though they are in bhed still? Some of our patients are even being seen several times after being admitted, but the visits are happening in the ED.

Any suggestions?
