Can someone help me on this procedure? procedure is hysteroscopy, dilatation and currettage (failed), Pratt dilators were used in an attempt to dilate the internal os: however I was unable to dilate the internal os , thus I was also unable to pass the hysteroscope, so that part of the procedure was abandoned. Endocervical curettage was then carried out. How would you code, an auditor told us a long time ago that we were to code the procedure and put 52 on as the "intent" was there to do the hysteroscopy. I don't really understand that so can someone explain this to me. thanks alice

52 vs 53 modifiers

I was taught to use these two modifiers as follows:
-52 modifier for reduced service - when the provider PLANNED to do a reduced procedure

-53 modifier for discontinued procedure - when the provider INTENDED to perform the entire procedure, but due to difficulties out of his/her control, was unable to complete the procedure.

From your original post, I would think the -53 modifier would be most appropriate to your scenario.

Hope that helps.
