The 2025 Obesity designated by class coding clinic states "Assign only code E66.813, Obesity, class 3, for provider documentation of class 3 obesity and morbid obesity. Assign an additional code to identify the body mass index (BMI), if known. It is not appropriate to assign code E66.01. In this case, the provider has further specified the obesity as class 3." To me this implies that the class designation is more specified than morbid obesity. Is this the case for all obesity class designations? If an encounter documents Class 2 and severe obesity, do you code E66.812 and not E66.01? There are no excludes notations at E66.8 other obesity.
