Seeking guidance on correctly coding ISCHEMIC BOWEL. The provider documented this condition without chronicity. I'm working audits for 2014 and when mapping chronicity is required or there's a default code. when previously coded they captured acute chronicity but provider had not documented as such. If anyone has information on this scenario it would be greatly appreciated.

I thought that if it wasn't documented "chronic" it had to be considered "acute". I tried to find a coding clinic or guideline to back this up, but couldn't find anything. It may be a carryover from coding hepatitis. If it is not doc as chronic, it is assumed acute.
