If the H&P of an inpatient encounter has COPD w/ Acute Exacerbation in the Assessment and Asthma, unspecified in the Past Medical History (Med list has Advair Diskus as well as Montelukast, would J44.1 and J44.89 both be coded?

Hi Jonas:)
I d NOT use dx J44.89 but use dx first J44.1 and Z87.09 as past history of Asthma. In the future if documented past history look in Z dx blocks of Z87 and Z86 per medical specialty . Also, if mentioned in documentation is the patient a current or past smoker please add it.
I hope helped you!
Lady T;)
