When can you use layered closure codes in addition to original procedure code. ex. can you code layered closure with an inguinal hernia repair? How about with the removal over a skin lesion that requires the skin to be closed in layers (intermediate)?

Hi - I responded to your hernia question in another thread. As for the question on intermediate repair for a lesion excision - yes, in this case intermediate or complex closure can be reported separately. Read the CPT instructions under Excision-Benign Lesions/Excision-Malignant Lesions (pt 54 and 55 of 2008 CPT Professional). Kind of the exception to the rule in the surgical guidelines. Hope that helps.
