Hello community,

We are in Oregon and have a foot & ankle surgeon who is getting hip surgery in Sept. Another surgeon will be taking over the professional aspect of seeing her patients for 6 weeks, he is a certified DPM surgeon, but is not accredited with most of the insurances here in Oregon as he is coming from Arizona. He plans to stay and so we are working on getting him Oregon certified, but it will not be complete by the time she takes her leave. Could I get additional information on the locum tenens where a sub physician can fill in for a physician who is absent? Does the DPM from Arizona bill under our surgeons NPI number with a modifier while she is out recovering from her surgery? Thank you in advance.

I work in Massachusetts at a PCP office and we recently had a locum cover for a medical leave. We did get the locum mostly credentialed before their start date. We found that some insurance companies credential them specifically as a locum or a "moonlighter" and it seemed to not take too long. BCBSMA required us to get a new NPI number for our locum which took a very long time. We adjusted the schedule and the locum only saw the insurances they were credentialed with. We billed the claims under the employed providers NPI with the Q6 modifier for 60 days. Just so you are aware not all insurance companies recognize the Q6 modifier. I hope this is helpful! Good luck!
