Locum tenens - physical therapy

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Physical Therapist would like to bring in another physical therapist to cover his patients during a vacation. Both are therapists not PTA's. Is there anyway to bill for the substitute PT? Do the rules pertaining to locum tenens apply only to physicians? Is there any other rule that would apply to this scenario?

Thanks,
Julie, CPC

I billed PT for quite a long time. Medicare will definitely not accept PT or OT locum tenens. However, you can check with the major carriers in your location. Some might have exceptions. Check with your provider reps. But don't be surprised if they say no. Its been a while and there were fewer and fewer carriers making this exception then. However, it doesn't hurt to ask.
