Adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder, also sometimes referred to as "frozen shoulder," is a disorder of unknown origin that causes pain and loss of range of motion in the shoulder joint. This condition progresses in three distinct stages. In the "freezing" stage, which lasts between 10 and 36 weeks, the patient experiences the most severe pain and a gradual loss of range of motion. In the "frozen" stage, which lasts between 4 and 12 months, the pain decreases gradually, but the patient does not regain full motion of the joint. In the "thawing" stage, which can last between one and several years, the patient gradually regains nearly full motion of the limb. Treatment of this disorder concentrates on pain management and resting the joint.
