For background, I work in healthcare policy specializing in coding, coverage, and reimbursement, but my prior experience is in the clinical setting in revenue cycle management that includes coding. To move up in my organization, I'm going to have to have a master's or above. I'm doing my research on master's programs for in the future, and all the options are a little overwhelming. The only thing I have figured out is MBA with a healthcare concentration is probably not the path I want to take.

I'm curious as to what programs those who have pursued a Master's chose and why.

I’m currently pursuing a Master’s in Public Health.

I had also considered earning a Master’s in Health Information Management, since it would have been more directly relevant to my coding career and could have made me eligible to sit for the RHIA exam.

Ultimately, I chose public health because I was drawn to the broader, global perspective it offers. I’m pursuing this degree primarily as a personal goal - I started a master’s program years ago, but at the time it was too difficult to balance with work and my then-young children.

Now that I’m an empty nester, I’m finally able to finish that degree for the sense of personal accomplishment.

If I were doing it specifically to further my existing career, I probably would have gone the Health Information Management route, or maybe even Health Informatics, since I’m a bit of a techie and math nerd at heart.
 
I have a Master's in Health Administration and found that the coursework aligned with my goals and job responsibilities. Earning this degree gave me an opportunity to have an overall look at senior/executive leadership expectations, to have a solid understanding of how healthcare business functions and most importantly..... it increased my credibility in my organization.

I took courses in information technology, healthcare law, project management and strategic planning. It was entirely online, which was helpful. (St. Joseph's College of Maine). https://www.sjcme.edu/degrees/master-health-administration/
