I was wondering if you anyone can tell me what the MD to Coder Ratio should be by specialty? Thank for your help.

MD to coder ratio

I imagine there are no set standards- I work for several specialty outaptient clinics, along with several regular family Practice outpatient clinics- currently I am the only coder- spend a lot of time doing Internal audits as well as pulling Statistical reports for management based on MD coding- but if there is a suggested ratio I would be curious to know that answer as well.:D

Depends on work volume of the providers. We have 26 physicians and 3 coders, but each have a different amount of physicians. We track the amount of surgeries each physician performs on a yearly basis and then distribute physicians to coders based on cases per year. I code and do reimbursement - I code approx 250-350 cases per month in slow months, I am dreading Oct-Dec. It all depends.
