Wiki Medicaid secondary

A patient presents for sick visit. BCBS primary and Medicaid secondary. BCBS allowed amount went to deductible. Medicaid coverage only for family planning services. Can I bill the patient the amount allowed by BCBS since her visit was not related to family planning services? Always thought couldn't bill patients that have Medicaid and have never had this issue before. Thanks!

Hi DOmaha....

In this case a quick call to Medicaid might be in order. I believe you can bill patient as medicard services are only for wellness/parenting issues. Let me know what the outcome is. Hope my suggestion helps.

My understanding is that you can bill the patient, but you cannot send them to collections unless a waiver was signed in advance.
