Medicare patient seen doctor on 01/05/2018 for consultant so coded 99223. Then admitted in hospital as initial inpatient care on 01/06/2018, do we code 99223 or 99233?

If the patient was not admitted until 1/6/18, then the services for 1/5/18 are coded incorrectly. The E&M code for the consultation would need to be coded with the CPT based on the patient's status at that time, i.e. emergency department, observation or outpatient. The initial inpatient care codes should only be billed when the patient is admitted to inpatient status.

The E/M consultation code must be bill where the patient was seen at that time for example in emergency dept.
The inpatient code should be bill when the patient is admitted in the hospital.
