I have a Medicare Inpatient....if the provider sees a patient for a "consult" for the first time on the same day that the Physician of record discharges the patient, does the consulting physician use initial or subsequent codes???? Also, does anyone have a good reference resource on information for how to bill current services that use to be coded as consults???

If it is a level 3-5 visit, you will still use the initial codes(99221-99223). If it is a low level consult(1-2) then you will go to susequent visit codes. DecisionHealth has an excellent crossover tool for the consult codes.
